ABOUT US:
The Department of Information Sciences (DIS) was established in 2003. It offers study programmes at three levels (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral postgraduate studies). As one of newest LIS schools in the country, DIS has established an important national position in the field of information sciences today. Our undergraduate and graduate students are adept at using latest technologies and methods for different professional and research tasks, and the Department recruits competent faculty members who understand both libraries and the broader context of information systems and services. Our Ph.D. program attracts (inter)national doctoral students from a broad range of heritage institutions (libraries, archives and museums), ICT and publishing companies and research/academic institutions. Our best doctoral students go on to positions of prominence in research and teaching, at academic institutions in the same field of study or in senior positions in various information and heritage institutions.
In its current configuration, the six major areas of education and research in DIS are:
- Information and Communication Technology and Information Systems
- Organization, Preservation and Use of Written Heritage
- Designing and Building Digital Collections and Services
- Research into Information Needs and Reading Habits
- Information Literacy and Information Systems in Education
- Managing of Change in Publishing and Scholarly Communication
In all of these areas we have (inter)nationally recognized leaders. DIS plans to build and maintain that strength, and over the next few years to expand into other areas as well: human-computer interaction, social informatics, innovative information and educational materials/aids design, and communication studies.
The department has established very strong international relations through the organisation of numerous international conferences (LIDA 2009-2018, ISI 2015, ISIC 2016, PUBMET 2014-2018, and a number of doctoral schools), through Erasmus and CEEPUS mobility programmes and through the memberships in international organisations (ASIST, IFLA, Euclid, ALISE, ICARUS).
Revised undergraduate and graduate study programmes of Information Sciences are accredited in 2014. They have expanded the subjects of Library and Information Science (LIS) to publishing and archival studies and replaced existing LIS programmes in 2015/2016.
Revised study programmes in Information sciences aim to educate competent professionals who will be equipped to work in ever changing environment and society that is influenced by the increasing application and use of the ICT, new ways of organizing and disseminating information and new ways of communicating. These changes require new approaches of managing the information institutions, creating and offering new services through which these institutions will further open up to their community/communities and will find ways to directly contribute to the economic and social development locally and nationally (information management and adding value to the recorded knowledge).
